Baby's 1st class can feel a little nerve-wracking

Walking into your baby’s very first class can feel both exciting and a little nerve-wracking. What should you bring? How will your baby react? Will you know what to do? At Gymboree Play & Music, we’re here to make that first step easy, welcoming, and full of joyful connection. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your baby’s first class experience.

1. What to Bring

You won’t need much, but these essentials will help you feel prepared:

  • A change of clothes for baby (accidents happen!)

  • Diapers and wipes (we have a clean, well-stocked diaper changing room)

  • A water bottle for yourself

  • Comfortable clothing for both you and baby

Tip: Babies don’t need socks — barefoot is best for better traction on our play equipment. Grown-ups should wear non-slip socks.

Forgot your socks? No worries — we have socks available for purchase at $2 per pair. All proceeds are donated annually to SickKids Hospital, so your small purchase helps support a big cause. ❤️

2. Before Class: A Few Must-Dos

  • Sign the waiver before your first session.

  • Keep your little one within arm’s reach at all times for safety.

  • Put away your phone and be fully present. This is playtime, bonding time, and learning time for both of you!

3. What to Expect in Class

Each 45-minute class includes songs, sensory play, movement activities, visual stimulation, baby massage, and equipment exploration. Every two weeks, we introduce a new theme to keep things fresh and exciting.

You’ll be guided through developmental activities that support your baby’s growth — physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively.

4. You’re Part of the Class Too

Your baby doesn’t learn by watching — they learn by doing, with you! You’re not just a spectator; you are your baby’s lifelong teacher. Be ready to sing, play, move, and engage. Don’t be shy — the more you get into it, the more your little one will too.

Lead the play. Babies and toddlers don’t automatically know how to explore play structures or interact with props. That’s where you come in! Our teachers will show you the techniques, and you’ll model the play for your baby to follow.

5. Adapting Takes Time

For most babies, it takes around 3 consistent weeks to adapt to the new class environment. They may cry, cling, or just observe at first — and that’s completely okay. Keep showing up, because…

Repetition is key. Consistency builds confidence.

Once they get familiar, you’ll see big improvements in engagement, motor skills, and social responses.

6. Apply What You Learn at Home

Class doesn’t end when you walk out the door. The songs, movements, and interaction techniques you learn can be part of your daily routine. Whether you're in our playroom or at the local playground, you can apply the same Gymboree techniques to help your child explore, play, and connect with confidence.

Remember: No one is born knowing how to be a parent. We’re all learning as we go. And that’s exactly what Gymboree is here for — to support you as you support your baby. Every moment of play becomes a teaching moment, guided by love, curiosity, and connection.

Final Thoughts

Your baby’s first class is more than just play — it’s the beginning of a shared learning adventure. So relax, stay consistent, explore the equipment, and enjoy these special early milestones. You are your baby’s most important teacher — and we’re here to help you every step of the way.

We can’t wait to welcome you and your little one into our Gymboree family!
