From Sitting to Crawling: How to Support Your Baby’s Next Big Move

One of the most exciting parts of your baby’s first year is watching them gain independence—starting with sitting up on their own and leading into crawling. This stage isn’t just adorable—it’s critical for developing strength, coordination, and brain connections. At Gymboree Play & Music, we’re here to help your little mover build confidence and motor skills through play-based activities designed specifically for babies 4–9 months old.

What Happens Between Sitting and Crawling?

🧷 1. Core Strength Development

Before crawling comes stability. Babies first learn to sit upright, which builds the core muscles they'll need to push up and move forward.

  • Gymboree Tip: Try gentle seated play with toys at eye level to encourage balance and core engagement.

🖐️ 2. Tummy Time Transitions

Tummy time continues to be essential. Babies begin to push up on their hands, pivot, and reach—early signs they’re prepping to crawl.

  • Gymboree Tip: Our infant classes feature soft ramps and tunnels to encourage safe tummy time with a purpose.

🧠 3. Cognitive Growth

As babies explore their bodies and surroundings, they're also making important brain connections: problem-solving, spatial awareness, and cause-and-effect.

  • Gymboree Tip: Simple obstacle courses and peekaboo tunnels in our classes turn movement into learning

🐾 4. The First Crawl (Or Scoot, or Roll!)

Every baby moves differently. Some crawl on hands and knees, others scoot, roll, or bear-crawl—but the goal is the same: mobility and exploration.

  • Gymboree Tip: Our soft play zones are perfect for babies to practice without fear of bumps or slips. Plus, our teachers model and guide movement through songs and games.

Why It Matters: Movement = Brain Power

When babies crawl, they’re not just getting around—they’re firing both sides of the brain, building cross-lateral coordination, and laying the groundwork for reading, writing, and focus later on.
